Conclusions

A review of the data exploring best practices in teaching echocardiography shows only limited effects describing the curricular and assessment components of an overall educational system, rather than one-on-one clinical teaching. Future papers should explore application of point-of-care teaching and the impact of interventions on patient outcomes.

The authors evaluated a short, intensive echocardiography curriculum in performing echocardiography and in the acquisition and short-term retention of basic echocardiographic concepts among pediatric cardiology fellows. The 3-day boot camp consisted of lecture-based and hands-on echocardiography sessions. Participants completed a survey to assess prior experience, a pretest, and a self-efficacy assessment. Following completion, participants took a post-test, repeated the self-efficacy assessment, and participated in a proctored performance-based test. Fellows were subsequently followed during the first 3 months of their fellowships.

Six first-year pediatric cardiology fellows participated in the study. Median written examination scores improved. For 126 objectives assessed among the fellows, 99 (79%) were addressed at least satisfactorily on the performance-based test. Cardiology fellows who attended the boot camp participated in the acquisition and interpretation of and independently performed more echocardiograms than fellows from the year prior who did not attend boot camp during the first 3 months of fellowship. Additionally, echocardiographic quality scores for echos obtained independently by fellows who went to boot camp were higher. There was a trend toward a correlation between score on the postcamp written examination and score on the performance-based test and self-efficacy scores improved.
