Conclusions—In a population sample of adults without clinically overt atherosclerotic disease, increased NADPH oxidase activity was associated with enhanced carotid IMT, suggesting a relationship between phagocytic NADPH oxidase– mediated oxidative stress and the development of atherosclerosis.
