The field of interventional echocardiography has transformed the role
of the echocardiographer, and we now must work in a multidisciplinary
and multimodal setting while we interact with the implanting
team, anesthesiologists, and industry representatives. We have had to
learn a new way to acquire images, guide wires, and catheters through
specific cardiac structures and heart valves during hour-long procedures.
With this came extensive radiation exposure, which was something
echocardiographers and sonographers were not accustomed to
or had not received adequate training and education on mitigating
the risks of.With the ever-expanding landscape of structural heart disease
procedures, IEs and sonographers must learn the language of radiation
safety and serve as our own advocates.
