Conclusions

Carotid IMT is a useful marker of the progression of atherosclerosis throughout the body, and is an excellent predictor of cardiovascular events. As a simple and non‐invasive procedure, measurement of carotid IMT is one of the most appropriate screening methods to specify high‐risk individuals in the community (Table ³). Furthermore, carotid IMT can be used to identify unknown risk factors of atherosclerosis and to evaluate the efficacy of new treatments (Figure 7). Therefore, it is expected that carotid IMT measurement will become a more common procedure.
